Hotel de Zink 2007

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

November is almost here and we need volunteers to provide meals for the Hotel de Zink program this November.

Each year in November, Hearts for Homeless at MPPC sponsors the Hotel de Zink program. We provide meals and a place to sleep for 15-20 homeless guests during the month of November. We need volunteers and groups to provide dinners, breakfasts and lunches for our guests.

The simplest way to participate is to provide breakfast on one of the days. You purchase breakfast items and drop them off the night before. You can also sign up to serve the breakfast in the morning.

We also need people to serve as “hosts”, to interact with our guests and make them feel welcome. You would be responsible for one day of the week during November, and need to be present from 7:00-9:00p.m.  During this time, you will mix with the guests and share a meal with them. Groups are also welcome to come by at dinnertime to provide music (piano, guitar, etc) or other entertainment - please let us know beforehand if you would like to do this.

For more information please contact Renee Masterson, 650.323.4439. See also some additional tips on interacting with our guests from last year’s orientation meeting.

September BBQ in Menlo Park

Tuesday, August 14th, 2007

What a wonderful success Compassion Weekend was! We made some amazing connections and we believe that God is leading us to continue His work by hosting another event. We’re looking for volunteers to get involved in a scaled down version of the Compassion Weekend picnic.

Date: Saturday, September 15

Time: 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Location: Burgess Park, Menlo Park

Capacity is limited to 150 guests and volunteers. We will be promoting the event to the residents of the Opportunity Center, Clara Mateo, the VA Hospital and the homeless community in general.

If you’re interested in getting involved, please contact Renee Masterson via e-mail at info@hearts4homeless.org, preferably before August 24.

South Bay Stand Down

Tuesday, August 7th, 2007

We recently received this invitation to volunteer for the South Bay Stand Down event on September 8,9, and 10:

My name is Yoko Galbraith and I am the South Bay Stand Down Volunteer Coordinator at the Department of Veterans Affairs in Menlo Park. The Palo Alto VA Health Care System, Counties and local community organizations are hosting the South Bay Stand Down on September 8th, 9th and 10th at the Boulder Creek Scout Reservation. Stand Down is a multiple day event providing services to homeless veterans. We are anticipating 200 veterans to participate in this event and are asking for volunteers to help create an opportunity for homeless veterans to access available resources and to reduce some of the barriers that have kept them homeless. Volunteers may work single or multiple shifts on Saturday and Sunday (8-12pm, 12-4pm, 4-8pm) and on Monday (7-11am or 10-4pm). We will provide transportation to and from the event site several times per day for volunteers who do not wish to drive themselves. If you are interested in volunteering at the event, or would like more information about Stand Down, please contact me at (650) 493-5000, ext. 22445, or the South Bay Stand Down hotline (650) 804-1794. I will get your name, contact information, the shifts for which you are interested in volunteering, and whether you will need transportation. Thank you for helping homeless veterans and God bless you.

Best regards,

Yoko Galbraith
